VPN stands for Virtual Private Network. As technology advances, users are traveling more and still need access to the same services they have on campus. A VPN creates a means for private communication between geographically distributed locations.
The University VPN is a secure access entry point to the OU network from any remote site. The VPN is an added security measure that IT is implementing so that all users will be authenticated when using the OU network and the data being transferred through the VPN will be more secure. The OU VPN consists of dedicated hardware at the access point to the OU Network and client software running on your computer.
Users trying to access OU services, such as file sharing and e-mail (Microsoft Exchange Accounts only), from off campus will be required to enter the University network through the VPN. Each time you want to use secured OU services from off campus, you must connect to your Internet Service Provider and then start the VPN client.

SECURITY ISSUES
- Virus Protection
An up-to-date antivirus product must be installed on your computer. The antivirus product can help protect your computer from bviruses and Trojan horses. OU has licensed antivirus software and updates for the university community. Check the Campus Specific Information page for download locations for the antivirus software.
- Personal Firewalls
Personal firewall software or hardware devices may be used as further protection against security risks. At this time only Black Ice Defender and Zone Alarm are certified by Cisco for use with the VPN client.
- Best Practices
Turn your computer OFF when not in use. Because cable modem devices are “always on”, have a permanent address, and are connected to the Internet, they are more susceptible to hacking. If your home computer is compromised and then connects to the University network as a trusted host, then the University systems can be compromised.
